The Awards for The Top 50 businesses with Irish took place on the 1st June in the Four Seasons Hotel, Dublin.  Organised by the national Irish language newspaper LÁ NUA, and sponsored by PriceWaterhouseCoopers and Foras na Gaeilge, this was the second year of the Awards.  Interestingly, the Awards were not confined to Irish based individuals or companies with recipients from America and the Czech Republic featuring.

Recognition for the use of Irish in marketing in the private sector went to Cantrell & Cochrane and in the public sector to Iarnród Éireann the latter in particular consistently pushing forward the use of the language in many aspects of their business.  In the information technology sector Gasta.ie a very useful search engine in Irish received an award and artist Louis Mulcahy received an award for best Gaeltacht business. Louis exports pottery around the world.

The award for Entrepreneur of the Year Europus who operate bilingually and produce subtitles for programmes on TG4.  Fiontraithe le Gaeilge, a group set up to improve their business skills also received an award for “Inspiring Entrepenurs”. The Top 50 Awards are now an established and very important event in the business calendar and let us hope that we will see much more competition in years to come as more businesses realise the importance of the Irish language.
